The Acropolis

Practical advice:

  • In hot weather, be ready at the entrance when it opens.  (Do the same at the Agora)
  • Do as much instruction as possible before the visit.
  • Don't try to gather your group and talk to them on the Acropolis; guides will stop you. But they will not give the information tailored to your group's exam needs.
  • Consider providing a recorded commentary for students' iPods.
  • Don't forget to let them discover the column drums built into the defensive wall.
  • Point out the Propylea wall with lifting bosses still there, and the column drums without fluting but with lifting bosses.
  • Invite students to look along the long sides of the Parthenon to see the lack of straight lines. If they have been well taught they will also be interested in the line-up of columns and triglyphs.
